The Open Enrollment period is from October 15 – December 7 each year.
The best time to enroll in a Medicare Supplement Plan is during your Medicare Supplement Open Enrollment Period. This period lasts 6 months and begins the first day of the month in which you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.
A Supplement also known as Medigap is coverage that you add to your Medicare Parts A and B. An Advantage Plan also known as Part C is an alternative to Original Medicare Part A and B. The Medicare Advantage plan replaces the individual’s Original Medicare and the carrier will now manage your Medicare Part A and Part B. Some Advantage plans will also cover prescriptions but others won’t. The Medicare Advantage plans offered will have the same benefits offered as Medicare Part A and Part B. As a trade off for lower premiums many Advantage Plans have a smaller network of doctors. And little or restrictive coverage outside of the area.
Medicare Part A covers hospitalization and Medicare Part B covers your daily medical coverage and doctor visits. Medicare Part D is the Prescription Drug Plans (PDP’s).
In most states, insurance companies can deny private Medigap Plans because of pre-existing conditions outside of Open Enrollment. Outside of Open Enrollment, if you don’t meet underwriting requirements the insurance carrier can deny coverage or offer coverage at a higher rate.
There are 2 separate enrollment periods each year: Open Enrollment Period for Medicare Advantage and Medicare Prescription drug coverage that allows a person to go from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan or from a Medicare Advantage Plan back to Original Medicare. In addition, they can add or drop a Prescription Plan. This takes effect on October 15-December 7. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period allows you to switch Medicare Advantage Plans (with or without drug coverage) and you can drop the Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare. This takes effect from January 1 - March 31.
If your employer has 20 or more employees you do not need to sign up for Part B right away since the group plan will be the primary insurer. If your company has fewer than 20 employees, you would need to enroll in Part B as medicare is your primary insurer.
